CNDC Executive Director Chosen for American Marshall Memorial Fellow  Congratulations to Colleen Gilson as she has been awarded the Marshall Memorial Fellowshiop (MMF) for 2011.  Colleen will be one of 44 emerging American leaders representing 16 states and the District of Columbia during the 24-day traveling program to five cities across Europe.  While there, Colleen and her colleagues will learn about the institutions and people that drive Europe's cities, regions, countries, and multilateral systems through meetings with local counterparts.
The Marshall Memorail Fellowship was created by the German Marshall Fund (GMF) in 1982 to introduce a new generation of European leaders to America's institutions, politics, and people.  In 1999, GMF launched a companion program to expose future U.S. leaders to a changing and expanding Europe.  The program attracts the best and brightest from all sectors through a very competitive national and regional process.  The German Marshall Fund of the Unites States is a non-partisan American public policy and grantmaking institution dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues. Since 2000, the Cleveland Foundation has pertnered with the German Marshall Fund to serve as the regional coordinator for Cleveland in the American Marshall Memorial Fellowship program.  To date, the Cleveland Foundation has selected and supported 57 young professional leaders, 28-40 years old.  The German Marshall Fund continues to acknowledge the high quality of the program operated in Greater Cleveland, fellows high caliber, diverse perspectives represented by the Cleveland slate, the selection process utilized to place the fellows, and structures in place to ensure fellows successful travel.
Also joining Colleen from the Cleveland area are Gregory Peckham, Executive Director of Cleveland Public Art, Darin Siley, Data Management Analyst, Cuyahoga Community College and Arlene Watson, Principal and Creative Director, Mobius Grey.  We congratulate all for receving this very prestigious honor.

Helpful Tips for Getting Through a Cleveland Winter  It is the beginning of December and the snowflakes are flying and the wind is howling.  Below are some tricks that might make it easier to get through a Cleveland winter:

  • Keep your headlights clear with car wax.  Just wipe ordinary car wax on your headlights that will prevent slush and snow from accumulating on your lights.  Repeat every six weeks or so.
  • Squeek-proof your wipers with rubbing alcohol.  Wipe the wipers with a cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol or ammonia.  This one trick will make those streaky and squeaking wipers a thing of the past.
  • Ice-proof your windows with vinegar.  Fill a spray bottle with three parts vinegar to one part water and spritz on your windows at night.  In the morning, they will be clear; vinegar contains acetic acid which raises the melting point of water preventing it from freezing.
  • Prevent car doors from freezing shut with cooking spray.  Spritz cooking oil on the rubber seals around card doors and rub in with a paper towel.  This will prevent water from melting into the rubber.
  • Fog-proof your windshield with shaving cream.  Spray some shaving cream on the inside of your windshield and wipe off with a paper towel.  Shaving cream has many of the same ingriedents found in commercial defoggers.
  • De-ice your locks in seconds with hand sanitizer.  Just put some sanitizer gel on the key and the lock and the problem is solved.  You can also try Vaseline for your locks.

The above tricks and tips will help us all get through those long Cleveland winters.

The Cleveland Industrial Renention Initiative is an Integral Part of Mayor Frank Jackson's Plan that Links Manufacturing Businesses to Valuable Community
resources that can help manufacturers improve operations and maintain profitability. The initiative, called CIRI for short, continues its mission to raise industry awareness of available resources to stimulate business and neighborhood investment, foster job creation, and make doing business  in Cleveland easier.  CIRI helps Cleveland companies throughout the city access financing, attract and train employees, expand their industrial capacity, and build connections so they remain competitive.  CIRI's Industrial Development Managers link manufacturers to resources and solutions in :

  • Market diversification
  • Manufacturing operations improvement
  • Workforce training programs targeting manufacturing industries
  • Public services, safety and security, building permits, and zoning
  • Public financing and incentives
  • Infrastructure improvement advocacy
  • Environmental compliance
  • Real estate site selection and development

In addition to assisting the manufacturer, CIRI also brings value to the community by working with the neighborhood development corporatons to:

  • Make companies aware of the resources available through their local CDC
  • Assist in developing mutually beneficial plans for residential and industrial growth
  • Increase neighborhood exposure to the industrial base
CIRI has proven again and again, by anecdote and by formal review, that one-to-one, personal inquiry and follow-up, by a seasoned manufacturing outreach staff person, gets things done.  CIRI is here to respond to concerns and address the obstacles faced by the area's manufacturing businesses.

Buying a Green Cottage Makes the Most "Cents"!  Get more for your money.  Did you know that the monthly cost for a $109,900 newly built Green Cottage can be equal to the monthly cost for a typical two bedroom renovation with a purchase price of $83,000?  Based on current interest rates and tax abatement the current monthly mortage would be the same for both properties.  But, the renovated home would not have a LEED Platinum rating, would not have Energy Star Appliances included, and have water saving fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen.  All this and more can be yours when you purchase a home through the Community Land Trust of Greater Cleveland.  A recent Urban Institute study shows that community land trusts (CLT's) deliver on their dual objective of providing sustainable home ownership that generates wealth-building opportunities for lower income families while maintaining a stock of affordably priced owner-occupied housing.  At Community Land Trust of Greater Cleveland, they are committed to the success of their homeowners.  They offer strong support before, during and after your home purchase.  For further information, visit their website or you may contact them at 216-334-1620.
