Neighborhood Progress, Inc. Strategic Investment Initiative Recognized as a Bright Idea by Harvard University  Neighborhood Progress, Inc. (NPI)  Strategic Investment Initiative partnership with the City of Cleveland is recognized as a "Bright Idea" by Harvard University's Ash Center.  In its inaugural year, Bright Ideas is designed to recognize and share creative government initiatives around the country with interested pubic sector, nonprofit, and academic communities.  The Strategic Investment Initiative (SII), has worked to create a strong partnership with the City of Cleveland to focus on targeted, comprehensive neighborhood investments, sustainability, stabilization and collaboration.  Some of the unique aspects of this collaboration include foreclosure prevention, demolition, and rehab/sale program (Opportunity Homes) to stabilize neighborhoods; working together on sustainability, including a land reuse program, land reuse study, and pattern book (ReImagining a More Sustainable Cleveland) among others.  The City of Cleveland and NPI have capitalized on the opportunity to forge a strong bond in the common interest of preserving and protecting our investments in our neighborhoods for the benefit of residents, visitors, business owners, and other stakeholders.
The SII began as a pilot program in 2004 and currently serves nine neighborhoods in Cleveland.  The initiative is a market-driven approach that incorporates a deeper investment in neighborhood planning and the CDCs have implemented strategies aimed at strengthening markets, addressing the negative effects of foreclosure and vacancy, and ultimately creating neighborhoods of choice.
NPI was selected from a pool of nearly 600 applicants including smaller-scale pilots which address a range of pressing issues including poverty reduction, environmental conservation, and emergency management.
Bright Ideas is an initiative of the Ash Center's Innovations in Government Program, which spotlights exemplary models of government innovation and advances efforts to address the nation's most pressing public concerns.  For more information on the Ash
Center visit  www.ash.harvard.edu.  To find out more about the Strategic Investment Initiative visit www.neighborhoodprogress.org.
