Talk Trash with the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District  CNDC's Retail Commercial Committee heard presentations about recycling for small businesses. Victor Rucker, Cleveland Department of Public Service, Jenita McGowen, Cleveland Office of Sustainablilty and Beau Daane, CCSWD, shared a wealth of information with the committee.  CNDC members are encouraged to sign up for the CCSWD's outstanding e-newsletter, Talking Trash.  The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste Management District is a public agency working to advance environmentally-sustainable and economical solid waste management practices within Cuyahoga County.  The District offers a variety of services designed to increase recycling opportunities, divert waste from landfills, promote environmental awareness, and support local recycling-based businesses.   For more information, contact Beau Daane at 216-443-3732 / bdaane@cuyahogacounty.us

Electronic Waste Recycling through RET3 Job Corps  Looking to recycle your computers,  cell phones and other electronic waste?  Contact RET3 Job Corp.  RET3 provides secure recycling of your computer equipment.  This local non-profit computer recycler located in Cleveland donated over 8,000 computers to 200 schools and non-profits in NE Ohio in 2009.  RET3 will electronically remove all the data from your computer before refurbishing or recycling the components. 2011 Summer Sprout  Summer Sprout is the Community Gardening program in the City of Cleveland and is currently accepting applications for the 2011 season.  Gardens involved in the program receive technical assistance and research-based education from OSU Extension and are eligible to receive seeds, soil tests, starter plants, soil, humus, reduced rate hydrant permits and roto-tilling.  If you would like to join the program, please go to the following website for the application:  http://cuyahoga.osu.edu/topics/agriculture-and-natural-resources/summer-sprout.  You can also contact Jim Thompson at 216-429-8000, ext. 246 or thompson.1608@osu.edu for more information.  All applications must be complete and received by Friday, October 1, 2010 by 5 pm in order to be considered.



Wanted:  Unemployed or Underemployed Youth Age 18-21 
for internships at the Advanced Technology Academy.  Other criteria include:  Cuyahoga County resident, high school diploma or GED and low income (Workforce Investment Act guidelines).  If candidates qualify for WIA funding, the first 240 will be invited to attend two FREE half-day workshops:  RESUME WRITING AND INTERVIEWING SKILLS.  If these workshops are completed, candidates will be invited to attend an INVITATION ONLY Job Fair.  At the job fair, employers will select 50 candidates for the Advanced Technology Academy.  Selected candidates will be trained and placed in a PAID INTERNSHIP with the employer who selected them with the potential of becoming a full-time job.  All internships will lead to a nationally recognized certification.  The workshops will take place at the Unified Technology Center located at 2415 Woodland Avenue, Room 229, 44115 and will be held on September 7th, 8th and 10th from 10a-2p and September 9th from 2p-6p.  For further information and what to bring to the workshop contact Robert Stewart, Program Manager at Robert.Stewart@tri-c.edu or by phone at 216-470-6522 or 216-987-3347.  To find out more about the Advanced Technology Academy, visit www.tri-c.edu and type in Advanced Technology Academy in the search box.

Celebrate Access For All - Party for Complete Streets--
Join the "Access for All" Coalition in a FREE celebration of a transportation future that embraces biking, walking and all modes of healthy, sustainable transportation.  Progressive Field will open their gates on Friday, September 17th from 5-9p and will offer discounts for food and drinks.  Cyclists are urged to ride their bikes to the event, with free bicycle parking provided by the Ohio City Bicycle Co-Op and Cleveland Bikes.  Helmets are strongly suggested and bike lights will be available for purchase.  Join the fun!!  The event is sponsored by Cleveland Bikes, Cleveland Indians, Earth Day Coalition, Greater Cleveland YMCA, Green City Blue Lake Institute, Ohio City Bicycle Co-Op and Walk and Roll Cleveland.  For more information visit GCBL.org/access.

Welcome, Millennia Housing Management  CNDC would like to welcome Millennia Housing Management (MHMLTD) as our newest supporting member.  Millennia Housing Management was established in 1995 to manage a newly acquired portfolio and to build an organization with the industry's most talented and experienced executives in both HUD subsidized and Low Income Tax Credit (LIHTC) housing.  Collectively, MHMLTD operates over 7,000 properties in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Missouri, Iowa, Kentucky and West Virginia.  Their mission statement is to provide the highest quality of standards in the management, operation and development of affordable rental housing, thereby striving to enrich the quality of life for their residents.  Frank Sinito is President and Founder.  For further information, click here. 


Weco Transitions  The WECO Board of Directors has appointed Robert Schordock, Director of Microenterprise, as Interim Director, beginning September 1st.  Robert is replacing Christine Henry, who is retiring August 31st after five years as Executive Director.  Robert has been with WECO for ten years, working with the microenterprise program and serving as the organization's financial administrator.  The Board has established a Search Committee and plans to have a new leader in place by the end of the year.  CNDC wishes Christine all the best in her retirement and congratulates Robert in his new endeavor. 
                                          

Stockyard, Clark-Fulton and Brooklyn Centre Community Development Office Relocates  Under the direction of the Detroit-Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO) and supported by DSCDO's housing development, commercial development, accounting and administrative staff, vital services will be retained in these 3 neighborhoods.    Residents identified priorities for services through a strategic planning process earlier this year and identified these priorities:  code enforcement and vacant housing, safety, community organizing and block clubs, nuisance abatement and reutilization of vacant land.  Services in portions of these neighborhoods will also be provided by Tremont West Development, Ohio City Near West and Midwest Housing.  Megan Meister is the Program Director and her staff includes Adam Gifford and Dharma Valentin, Community Organizers, Brennan Crawford, Director of Housing and Vacant Land Reutilization, Greg Baron, Housing Specialist and Matt Yourkvitch, Real Estate and Property Acquisition Consultant.

Community Land Trust of Greater Cleveland has relocated to the Slavic Village neighborhood.  Their new home is at 5700 Broadway Avenue, 44127 at the headquarters of Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Cleveland.  All contact information remains the same, except for their fax number which is now 216-441-2521.  The Community Land Trust of Greater Cleveland was formerly called the Cuyahoga Community Land Trust.
