A
Message From CNDC's Greater Cleveland Community Organizers
& Allies Access to transportation for
neighborhood residents is a concern for this committee.
Following is an excerpt from a recent newsletter: With 90
percent of transit agencies raising fares or cutting services
in the past year, the transit operations bill introduced by
Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown is crucial for millions of
hard-working families. Senator Brown's bill, and a similar one
introduced last summer by Missouri Representative Russ
Carnahan, would give transit agencies the flexibility to use
federal funds where they're most needed, whether it's for
operating assistance or capital investments. The
committee asks that you contact your senator via the
switchboard line: 202.224.3121 and urge them to co-sponsor
Senator Brown's transit operations bill, S.3189.

Space for Change Planning and
Pre-Development Grants Leveraging
Investments in Creativity and the Ford Foundation recently
released guidelines for a national planning and
pre-development grant program for organizations exploring the
creation of artist space (http://www.lincnet.net/artist-space/ford-foundation-planning-and-pre-development-grants).
The consortium is providing grants of up to $100,000 for
activities like community planning processes, strategic
planning, feasibility studies, site acquisition deposits, etc.
A broad range of facilities are eligible for consideration –
from live-work space to performance areas to galleries to
community arts centers to live-work housing. Please keep in
mind that, at least currently, these grants are specifically
earmarked for planning and pre-development activities and not
for development components of projects. For the first round of
funding, a Letter of Inquiry is due to Leveraging Investments
in Creativity no later than May 28, and funding decisions will
likely be announced in late August. Community
Partnership for Arts and Cluture is working to get the word
out to local community development organizations and arts and
culture organizations that might have an interest in such a
project or have already initiated one. CPAC will meet with
local groups interested in applying to provide additional
information that might help to strengthen their applications.
Please contact Seth Beattie at 216.575.0331, ext. 121 to
schedule a meeting with CPAC staff.

Greater Cleveland Habitat for
Humanity Second Annual Tool Drive
On Tuesday May 25th at 11 am Mayor
Frank Jackson, County Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones, County
Treasurer Jim Rokakis and other business, community and civic
leaders will join representatives from Greater Cleveland
Habitat for Humanity to kick off the organization's Second
Annual Tool Drive, at the Habitat facility located at 2110
West 110th Street. The countywide Tool Drive, which runs
through June 30th, asks residents, organizations and
businesses to donate new and used tools, as well as cabinets,
sinks, building materials, and appliances to Habitat for
Humanity. The donated items will be sold at the
organization's ReStore, a recycled building materials store
located at 2110 West 110th Street. Proceeds from ReStore
sales will be used to help Habitat build and rehabilitate
homes for those in need. Providing affordable
construction materials and tools so that the community can
repair, renovate and rehab deteriorating housing stock
supports their mission to "eliminate poverty housing" while
keeping tons of materials out of local landfills.
Supporters will be able to make monetary donations to Habitat
"at the cash register" at Do-it-Best Hardware stores and
Phoenix Coffee Shops throughout the Greater Cleveland
area. Small tools can also be dropped off at the 14 area
Do-it-Best locations. If donating very large items,
residents can call the ReStore to schedule a pick-up.
The Cleveland Neighborhood Development Coalition is one of the
many sponsors of this second annual event. For more
information on ReStore, visit www.clevelandrestore.org.

Humanity, visit www.clevelandhabitat.org or
