CDCs in
CLEVELAND
For
more than 25 years, community development corporations (CDCs) have addressed
problems of economic, physical and social distress in communities throughout
greater Cleveland. By uniting neighborhood residents, business leaders and
government, CDCs have been able to build affordable housing, create jobs, and
provide essential social services in the communities they serve. Their
fundamental mission is to build community leadership and empower residents to
take charge of their neighborhoods and create healthy, sustainable places to
live and work.
There
were only 10 CDCs in Cleveland 26 years ago. Now, there are nearly 50 working on
housing, retail, commercial and industrial initiatives. Many of the groups that
started as grass-roots organizations have survived for two decades or more
because of their commitment to neighborhood concerns. Cleveland's CDCs are
national trendsetters. Representatives from all over the United States look to
Cleveland's CDCs for information on "how to do it right." Our CDCs
lead by example, starting projects that others won't and creating programs that
assist residents to improve themselves and their surroundings. |
