Four neighborhoods to see business districts revitalized

On November 21, 2002, business districts in four city neighborhoods won special designation as Neighborhood Main Street Initiative sites, assuring them of financial and technical support through a program designed to boost struggling commercial areas.

The districts – Kamm’s Corners, Lorain Station Historic District, Old Brooklyn and Gordon Square Arts & Entertainment District – will use Main Street benefits to organize committees, develop work plans, schedule promotional activities, and train staff to revitalize their streets.

“Vibrant business districts are key to a healthy neighborhood,” said Mayor Jane L. Campbell at the ceremony held at the Weizer Building, 11801 Buckyeye Rd., to announce the new awards. “We are currently making measurable progress in revitalizing Cleveland’s business districts, and this program initiative exposes new opportunities to further reinvigorate our efforts.”

The Weizer Building is on a corridor that the Buckeye Area Development Corp. is rehabbing. Buckeye Road was designated a Main Street area in 1999, along with Professor Street in Tremont and Waterloo Road in North Collinwood. Broadway Historic District in Slavic Village followed in 2000.

“When businesses invest in the community, everybody wins,” said U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones. “I applaud the efforts of the Cleveland Main Street Initiative and look forward to working with participating organizations to further promote economic growth for Greater Cleveland.”

We’re delighted with the results we’ve seen in the four business districts Main Street has helped since 1999, and we’re confident our new groups will benefit too," said Mikelann Ward Rensel, executive director of CNDC.

“The generosity of our funders combined with the tenacity of our neighborhood leaders is a recipe for success,” said India Pierce Lee, senior program director of Cleveland/Northeast Ohio LISC. “LISC is confident this investment will lead to a community people are eager to call home.”
