The Cleveland Neighborhood Main Street Initiative is now Re$tore Cleveland which more closely reflects the mission and scope of the program. Re$tore Cleveland is a comprehensive retail / commercial revitalization program developed here in Cleveland that incorporates both the philosophy of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s National Main Street Center and the local market realities of physical development.

Conference

Five Re$tore Cleveland managers attended a week long Main Street Manager Certification Program presented by the National Main Street Center. This highly competitive program confers the highest degree of professional credentials for participants successfully completing the strenuous 2 year course. Congratulations to John Boksansky (Downtown Waterloo) and Matt Wiederhold (Gordon Square Arts & Entertainment District) for their successful completion of the program. The other three managers, Walter Wright (Re$tore Tremont), Cindy Janis (Downtown Kamm’s Corners), and Carolyn Smith (St. Clair Superior) have passed the first half of the training and will complete the sequence in 2005. Congratulations to all.

District Activities and News

Buckeye Area Development Corporation
Buckeye Road continues to attract new businesses. After relocating their independent insurance agency to a storefront on Cleveland’s busy Buckeye Road, Darwin and Deborah Rutledge have experienced a 70.7 percent jump in new business income. “People didn’t think of us when we were in an office building,” says Deborah Rutledge, “When you are prominently located in a neighborhood you become more top of mind.”

Congratulations to Rutledge Insurance Company for taking first place in the Innovation and Growth Category of the COSE Business Plan Challenge. They received an award of $15,000 and one year of free technical assistance.

Cudell Improvement, Inc.
With the West Tech Homes project nearing completion, the Lorain Station Historic District Economic Restructuring Committee is examining opportunities to capture the disposable income of new residents and home owners through new business attraction and remarketing initiatives.

Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization
Matt Wiederhold joins Detroit Shoreway after two successful years as a Main Street Program Manager in Toledo, Ohio. His program was awarded the Ohio CDC Association "Project of the Year" in 2002. He is passionate about American art and architecture from the turn of the century, and looks forward to helping develop Detroit Shoreway's commercial corridors.

Glenville Development Corporation
The Downtown Glenville Promotions Committee sponsored the first Annual Kwanzaa Celebration in December 2003. Over 300 people attended this community celebration with free workshops on financial literacy and entrepreneurship, plus an African marketplace and lots of music and food.

Kamm's Corners Development Corporation
The Kamm’s Corners Holiday event was a huge success with caroling under the clock, Santa arriving by horse-drawn carriage and a festive party for the entire family featuring musicians, balloon creations, refreshments and prizes. It was the kick-off for Kamm’s Corners CertifiChecks, a gift certificate program to support the merchants in Downtown Kamm’s Corners. For more information about Kamm’s Corners CertifiChecks visit www.kammscorners.com

Northeast Shores Development Corporation
Holiday Weekends on Waterloo: Arts Collinwood presented Weekends on Waterloo over three weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas as a welcome to the holiday season. Artists from the neighborhood showed and sold their artwork to admiring fans. A festive atmosphere prevailed on the Friday nights with food, drink and music, as well as a poetry slam. Saturday afternoons were decked out with children's fun: holiday crafts, storytelling and a coloring contest.

Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation
Re$tore Old Brooklyn completed the Old Brooklyn and Brooklyn Centre Food and Spirits Guide in early February. The first printing, 40,000 copies, will be distributed through the Old Brooklyn News, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, as well as business and employment centers throughout the West side communities. The brochure will feature 17 restaurants and food establishments offering dining room and carry out service. The cost is being shared by the participating restaurants and the Re$tore Old Brooklyn program of the Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation.

Slavic Village Development
Slavic Village Development was awarded an Inner City Tree Grant from the State of Ohio's Urban Forestry Department to plant street trees in an approximate five-block area of the Historic Broadway Re$tore District (HBD). The trees are an opportunity to enhance the HBD and make a visual and green connection to the proposed Wheeling & LakeErie Bikeway and Trailhead project that runs along the edge of the district.

St. Clair Superior Neighborhood Development Association
St. Clair Superior is seeking funding for two initiatives to address safety and security through the use of security cameras, digital video recorders and foot patrols. They are also going to work with the Substance Abuse Initiative of Greater Cleveland regarding the neighborhood Drug Free Zone program and signage too.

Tremont West Development Corporation
Re$tore Tremont had a banner year. The first ever Taste of Tremont event won a Dominion Community Impact Award, and the event sponsor, SCK Design, won a Pillar Award. The TwiFi (Tremont WiFi) committee has brought wireless internet access to the neighborhood, the Tremont House Tour sold out for the second year in a row, and the district continue to receive national and local media coverage for our fine restaurants, galleries and shops.
